There are many reasons people choose a gluten-free diet, but if you are among the one percent of Australians with coeliac disease it is not a choice… it is a necessity.
A diet that is free of gluten is essential for keeping symptoms at bay and feeling well.
The Back to Basics Healthy Living Program is perfect for anyone with stomach issues, as it helps to navigate around the foods that are causing inflammation in the body.
What is Gluten?
“Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, oats and in most ingredients that are derived from these grains”
Gluten is not destroyed by regular cooking methods and even the smallest amount can upset the belly.
What is coeliac disease?
Coeliac disease is an auto-immune disease triggered by gluten. For someone with coeliac disease, their immune response to gluten caused inflammation and damage to the villi that absorb nutrients from food in the small bowel.
The only treatment is the lifelong avoidance of gluten.
The Symptoms
The symptoms of coeliac disease vary widely:-
tummy pain
bloating
diarrhoea
constipation
nausea
vomiting
Symptoms can also be non-specific, such as tiredness, mouth ulcers, hair loss, brittle bones and pregnancy complications. For some people there are no symptoms at all.
Coeliac disease is one of the most under recognised conditions in Australia. New statistics show one in 70 Australians who have coeliac disease 80% don’t even know it. For many people though it can be very painful and a diet change is the best option to feeling better.
